Covered by Car

Unusual things covered by car insurance

Car insurance is a necessary expense. While you likely know the policy financially protects you if you’re in a crash, it comes in handy in other ways, too. Of course, you’ll still have to pay your deductible. But here are some of the more unexpected things car insurance often covers.

Comprehensive insurance:

  • Falling objects. If your car gets damaged by hail or even golf balls, comprehensive coverage will take care of it.
Animals. Any damage from rodents or insects is covered.
  • Earthquakes. If you live in an area that has frequent earthquakes, you’ll be covered under your policy. You don’t need seperate, specific coverage.
  • Fire. Any damage incurred by a wildfire is covered by comprehensive insurance.
  • Volcanoes. As Marketwatch reports, while it’s likely rare, damage from an erupting volcano is covered.
  • Vandalism. If someone breaks your window or causes any damage, your insurance policy will take care of the repair costs.
  • Collision and Personal Injury insurance:

  • Potholes. If you hit an especially deep pothole and it causes damage to your car, you’re covered.
  • Injuries. You know car insurance covers you if you’re hurt in an accident. Well, it also covers you if you’re injured while getting into or out of your car. It also covers you if you get injured while working on your vehicle.
  • What Isn’t Covered:

  • Gas pump mistakes. If you somehow manage to fill your car with diesel and it only takes gas, you’re out of luck. Car insurance will not cover any damage.
  • Maintenance. Over time, your car will need routine maintenance. This is not covered by your insurance.
  • Personal property. If someone steals personal belongings from your car, it’s not covered by auto insurance. However, if you have homeowners or renters insurance, you’re covered up to the policy limit.
