Tipping Etiquette

A quick guide to holiday tipping

Tipping is generally expected and appreciated during the holidays. So how do you know who to tip and how much? Lucky for you, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a quick guide to tipping during the holidays.

Create a List

The first thing to do is to create a list of the people in your life who you want to tip. After that, see if you can afford to tip them all. If you can’t, tip the people who you value the most. For the others, a nice handwritten note or a small gift will be appreciated.

Who to Tip and How Much

Having trouble making that tipping list? We’ve taken care of that. Here are people who are typically tipped during the holidays. We’ve also provided a rough estimate of how much to tip each of them.

  • Restaurant and grocery delivery drivers: At least 20 percent of the total bill.

  • Home or apartment maintenance workers: $30 to $100.

  • Trash collectors: $15 to $30 per worker.

  • Dog walkers: The equivalent of one extra day or week of work.

  • Ride-share drivers: 20 percent of the total ride fee.

  • Babysitters or nannies: The equivalent of one day or one week’s pay.

  • Hair Stylists: The price of one average visit.

  • Door attendants: $20 to $100.

  • Mail carriers: A gift worth up to $20.

  • UPS drivers: $20 to $50, depending on how often they come to your house.

  • FedEx drivers: They are not allowed to accept any cash or gifts.

Do One Thing: Create space in your budget for holiday tipping. This way you won’t leave anyone out.
